Can i brush my cat's teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste?

I'm afraid he might swallow it and get sick but it IS funny and good for dental hygiene.

Can i brush my cat's teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste?
You can use a toothbrush but DO NOT use toothpaste. The toothpaste is toxic and will kill your cat. However brushing your cats teeth with a very soft toothbrush and water will protect your cat from diseases such as peridontal disease. It will cause your cat pain, tooth loss, and very bad breath. Sometimes it can spread to the lungs, heart, liver, and kidney. To prevent this go to http://www.entirelypets.com/cettoothpast... and purchase one of the yummy flavors for your kitty. Mine hates anything with liver but loves vanilla mint and seafood. GOOD LUCK!

PS. These are tips for you to do this yourself Difficulty Level: average Time Required: 5 minutes

--------------------------------------...

Here's How:

Assemble supplies: sterile gauze, scissors, cat toothpaste (available at pet stores) or a weak sterile solution recommended by your veterinarian.

Wrap a strip of gauze around the index finger of your dominant hand and either dip it in the sterile solution, or apply a small amount of toothpaste to your fingertip.

Holding the cat in your lap, open his mouth

Gently rub your "finger brush" in a circular motion on his teeth, concentrating on the area next to the gums. Gently massage the gums at the same time. It's not necessary to do the back sides of the teeth.

Once your cat will tolerate this procedure, you can graduate to a small child's toothbrush.

Give kitty a few loving pats and kind words, along with a little treat to polish off with his shiny clean teeth.

Tips:

You might want to experiment with flavored toothpaste for cats. There is a fish-flavored one that I'm told is quite tasty.

If you start practicing examining your cats teeth at a very young age, this process will be much easier. See "How To Gentle a Kitten" for suggestions.

Bleeding of the gums is a sign your cat needs professional dental scaling by your veterinarian, so attend to that as soon as possible.
Reply:You can get supplies from a pet store to clean your cat's teeth, but don't use the brushes and paste designed for people.
Reply:ya not a good idea
Reply:dont use toothpaste if you do. Oh and a soft toothbrush like a baby one
Reply:I would like to see you try that! If your cat allowed you to do it, the cat would be a rarity.
Reply:It's good to brush a pet's teeth, yes, but don't do it with people toothpaste. You are right, it can make them sick. They make special toothpaste for animals...and they even Like it! Good luck.
Reply:TOOTHBRUSH YES TOOTHPASTE NO GET PETS TOOTHPASTE CUZ STUFF 4 HUMANS R NOT GUD 4 PETS
Reply:Sure , cats like fish - but that toothpaste says "Tartar CONTROL" , not "Tartar SAUCE". ok...that was kinda random , yet fitting , don't you agree?
Reply:I would suggest you not to do it because animals have other tools for certain things they need, just like we buy certain we need in order to accomplish something. I encourage you to visit a store for animals, there you can ask someone ansd I'm sure they'll help you out. However, don't do what your thinking because sometimes that may affect the cat's teeth, that's why is better to buy them their own tools. You should ask a veterinarian what to use, when ever you visit one.
Reply:you can use a regular toothbrush, but not toothpaste (if swallowed it could cause major problems), go to the pet store and buy some there
Reply:I'm not sure about brushing it's teeth but if your wanting to freshen it's breath you can squirt scope into it's mouth. Just a little though, maybe half of a syringe. My dogs vet gave me the tip b/c they have awful breath. He's not supposed to swallow it. If you do it correctly he will spit it everywhere. Sit him in the bathtub when you try it.
Reply:Does your cat know how to spit while brushing? If not, then don't use human toothpaste....it can be toxic to animals.
Reply:water jet will do

hohoho...
Reply:there are toothbrushes specifically made for cats...if you can't get one of those use a small baby's soft toothbrush and only use toothpaste meant for cats. the best is an enzyme one. You'll get ur cat sick if you use human toothpaste.
Reply:Get sum special toothpast made for that, i know they make it, or use the kids kind that doesnt have any flouride, i think it still might hurt her tho, so i would talk to ur vet
Reply:Ya, the supplies r at the pet store.

DON'T GIVE HIM UR TOOTH PASTE!!! U DONT KNOW IF HES ALOUD. GO TO THE PET STORE!!
Reply:If you mean the ones we use, no. There are special kinds of toothbrushes and toothpaste made for cats. Buy that kind.
