My cat had his teeth extracted yesterday. When does he go from baby food to cat food?

He had 21 removered and has sutures that will dissolve. He still has 2 bottom teeth. He has eaten only a little cat food this morning. No water at all. Help I feel so bad.

You need to give him very, very soft food that he can just lick so he doesn't have to use his poor sore gums at all. Either mash up his regular cannd food with lots of water so it is really runny, or get some soft convalescence food from your vet like Hills a/d.

Don't feel bad, if the cat needed this, then he needed it. Don't panic about the water, as long as fresh water is available at all times the cat will drink it if he wants it.

Try the above, if your cat doesn't eat at all within 48 hours (not unusual for them to not eat for even 12 hours after this kind of major work) then do call the vet. They can provide you with stuff to syringe feed the cat with and show you how, but I would think as long as you provide food he can pretty much drink, he'll eat it.

Reply:give him time and call his vet to check in and ask what he/she thinks would be be a good time to give him some food.
Reply:why did you have to take out his teeth??? I feel so bad for him. Poor kitty.
Reply:All that you can really do is try and comfort him and make sure that he is comfy. Your love will make him feel a little better. As for those teeth, he will grow new and he goes over to cat food when they grow back, otherwise it will hurt his gums.
Reply:talk to your vet for post-operative care. Your vet knows your cat, and would be in a better position to answer this question.
Reply:if you already gave him cat food why are you asking?

Your vet should have given you instructions but if not I'd call them and ask.

I would give him at least a week before giving dry food.
Reply:Hi

It looks like your cat has had a big problem so as to have 21 removed. Because it is a specific condition and not a common one, only a specialist will be able to answer your questions. Does your doctor have an emergency contact information? Keep a notebook for some emergency information and FAQs until he is alright.

The poor baby. I hope he is doing better. Hugs.
Reply:Make sure kitty is getting water, so he doesn't become dehydrated. You can use a medicine dropper, and give him a little to the side of his mouth gently. I would even try to use the dropper with the baby food blended with water--to ensure kitty is getting nourishment. Didn't your vet give you instructions when you left the office? If he did not, you might consider changing kitty's vet--you should feel the extended concern from the entire office when kitty has such major surgery!! Give him lots of LOVE!!
Reply:Poor thing, I have to wonder why they were removed?

When the skin heals he'll be ready. If his tummy can handle it, give him a little plain yoghurt, that will also help heal the mouth's insides.
