When should you start brushing your cat's teeth?

My kitten is 14 weeks and I'm not sure if I should start brushing her teeth yet.

When should you start brushing your cat's teeth?
I would start now. You can buy the cat toothpaste at a pet store. My vet recommended using a toothbrush made for babies (human ones, that is) because they usually have really soft bristles and cover more surface area than the cat toothbrushes. I also would try brushing in very short sessions at first, the point is to get her used to it for the first few weeks. Just getting the bristles to touch the teeth will be a victory at first. Always treat afterwards.


Try doing it when she is being sleepy and lazy, slower reaction time...
Reply:You shouldn't. Feed it cat biscuits (kibble) frequently and it will be ok.

Reply:You start brushing the cat's teeth when it's a kitten so it will get used to it. Cat dentistry is more expensive than regular visits to the vet. Once it eats solid food is when you can start brushing its teeth. Be sure to use kitty toothpaste and not human toothpaste.





Kibble just doesn't do as good a job.

As a side note, a quality canned food is better as your cat as a whole.
Reply:You should start brushing them as soon as they start eating solid food. Make sure you use the appropriate type of soft toothbrush. Also never use human toothpaste! There is special animal toothpaste you can get from your vet and possibly the pet store to use. For kittens you may want to start off with just using water until they and you get the hang of it so you don't get it everywhere. It really will save your kitties dental problems in the future.
Reply:You can start any day. They make flavored tooth paste for animals that can help. Don't use human tooth paste! But you don't have to use any tooth paste at all the brush will do a good job if you start this young.
