My elderly cat has very few teeth, what can I feed her?

My cat is 21. She's healthy, except her teeth have fallen out over the last few years. I feed her wet cat food, but she finishes it right away and if she doesnt' then it just get dry and inedible in her bowl. I like to leave food in her bowl at all times so that she can go there and eat at her leisure, but if I feed her dry food, she has trouble chewing it and will frequently (this is grosse) barf it up whole, and then eat it when it's soft. Does anyone know of any hardish-soft food specifically for cats with barely any teeth left that can be left in the bowl for hours?

try to crush her hard food and only buy mushy soft food and she will be OK.
Reply:I WOULD SAY THE SOFT MORSELS SO SHE CAN EAT THEM BUT, NOT MUCH AT ONCE. GOOD LUCK
Reply:there are "moist" morsels cat food, not wet and not dry. 9 lives makes it ,its called tender vittles. I stays moist in the bowl for hours.
Reply:I would put warm water in the bowl a day long that way it stays moist and does not harden you can use dry food and put it the water
Reply:Instead of giving her one portion at a time you can also give her smaller portions throught the day, which she will probably finish.
Reply:Mix a small amount of warm water into her dry food, enough to make it damp/soft not soggy it will last most of the day.

If it is too soft she will probably eat it too fast like her canned food.Leave it firm enough that she will take smaller portions.

Good luck.
Reply:Don't leave out dry food that has been moistened with water. It will develop a bacterial load faster than any canned food would.

My old cat (22 and 1/2) years ate mostly a raw meat home-prepared food. She had only lost one tooth in her lifetime. She would eat some kibble as treats too.

So with your cat I would not worry that she didn't have food all the time. One can of cat food should be sufficient if fed in two meals a day - or if you are home during the day you could divide it in thirds. When you open a can of food any that will not be consumed right away should go into a glass dish to save for later. Canned food does not have to be refrigerated if it is eaten in one day.
Reply:I would stay with the can food , smaller amounts and feed her a couple times a day . we feed our cats can food and some times they don,t finish it until late in the day and it will stay some what moist , there are nutrition tubes that you can put over the food to help boost vitamins that they need .
Reply:A twenty one year old cat is like a ninety-plus year old grandma.

You feed her what she likes because at her age you won't create new health issues.

You can add warm water to the dry food to make it soft for her. It's more satisfying than canned food because cans are always 75 to 90% water. It's also lest costly for the same reason, plus you always want to toss out wet standing food or moistened dry foods after a few hours due to the formation of bacteria, mold, etc. .

Good luck and congrats for having a twenty one year old. Did you know that with good health and proper quality nourishment some cats can live to thirty years.
Reply:I've heard you can feed hamburger %26amp; rice to elderly animals. It's easy to eat and good for them. Just fry some burger, drain and pat dry. I give it to my dog.... cats should like it too. Maybe try Tuna.
Reply:Wow, 21 years old! A cat at her 21st birthday is as aged as a human of 99, and since adult cats age four times as fast as we do, if kitty is more than 3 months past her 21st birthday, she's as aged as a human of over 100!

What a wonderful tribute to how well you've taken care of her! She's a lucky kitty to have you for her mom!

I'd skip the dry food. It's not really good for cats anyway, though the amount you've given her doesn't seem to have done her any harm.

Like some others, I'd suggest the "moist" foods. They might hold their moisture longer than true wet foods and be good for between meals snacks. If your schedule allows it, you might also increase the frequency of her main wet food meals.

A bowl of kitty treats might also be good for snacks. Some of them have a sort of semi-soft consistency.

I hope kitty makes it to 22 and beyond!
Reply:canned cat food, no chunks! just put some in a bowl when you get home give it some more,
Reply:AT HER AGE I WOULD GIVE HER WHATEVER SHE LIKES--TUNA--BOILED CHICKEN--FISH--WHATEVER--SHE DESERVES IT!!
