How can I clean my cat's teeth?

the have what look like a brown plaque on them. He won't eat any of the treats that are supposed to clean cats' teeth, and he won't let me hold him to brush them.

How can I clean my cat's teeth?
Hi,

There are a few options you can consider for your situation here.

1. vet cleaning

pros: most effective, immediate results

cons: expensive, cat must be anesthetized

2. Hill's Prescription Diet feline t/d

pros: may help to reduce plaque, stain, %26amp; tartar; affordable

cons: not a high quality food for your cat, more effective if

teeth have been vet-cleaned

3. Liquid Oral Care (made by Petkin): colourless %26amp; dourless

solution added to cat's drinking water

pros: affordable, easy to use

cons: cat must be on dry food diet, mildly effective

Bear in mind though that it is a misconception that ANY food can clean teeth. Food affects body pH and the rate at which tartar builds up. Food composition and a high sugar or starch content will affect bacterial growth in the mouth and the build-up of plaque - which will lead to tartar formation. Generally speaking, cats will benefit from a dental scaling between the ages of 6-8 years as a preventive measure.

All the best.

Reply:Petco
Reply:there is no need to clean your cats teeth, just feeding him cat biscuits should do the trick
Reply:go to petsmart or petco and they have special toothbrushes and toothpaste for cats %26amp; dogs.
Reply:You could take him to the vet to see what they think you should do.
Reply:There are special brushes for cats teeth try to brush them get someone else to help you hold him down. If that doesn't work either let it be or take him to the vet and see if they will do that for you.
Reply:Take him to the vets...

As the cat doesn't like it and could react aggresively, also you could harm it (some how).

I have cats, don't really take notice of their teeth though...
Reply:take it to the vet and get cat toothbrushes tey're erd and they have soft spikes on them which u put on ur fingers and then rub it on their teeth my cats don't like it very much but it works

Many adult cats suffer from heavy build-up of plaque or calculus on their teeth which causes them great discomfort when eating and will eventually lead to a refusal to eat and/or teeth loss.

Plaque and calculus can be removed by a veterinary surgeon while the cat is under a general anaesthetic. You can also buy food which loosens plaque and calculus whilst eating and teeth cleaning products are available. Many cats do not like having their teeth brushed; however, if brushing is started when they are young kittens tolerance levels increase.

Reply:well use mouth wash and tell it is water
Reply:you can go to petco, petsmart, any pets mart maybe even walmart in the pet department
Reply:the vet does a real expensive teeth cleaning.knock em out style..

maybe necessary at this point though

maybe kitty wont let you do it cause Peri disease is painful and advanced which is now also affecting his heart..
Reply:hey why dont u take your cat to veternity hospital... you can do whatever u want or just take a small piece of stick even small than a toothbrush or a pet toothbrush from the shop
Reply:you can go to any pet store and they should have a special tooth brush for the cat
Reply:If there is heavy brown plaque on your cats teeth brushing alone won't help. Brushing is meant to prevent the plaque, but you can't really brush it away. If you really want to get rid of it you'll need to have a dental cleaning done at your vet.
Reply:put teeth clearner in his food.
Reply:The vet can do it. they put the cat down under anesthesia. Then use a tool to clean the plaque off the teeth. It cost about $100.00 or more.

You can also take you thumb nail and scrape the tooth in a downward motion pulling hard to chip the plaque off the tooth.
Reply:You could perhaps try sneaking some of the teeth cleaning treats into his regular food and see if he will eat that. Also, the vet should have a few tips for how to clean kitty's teeth. One time they gave me something that looked like a thimble that you put on the end of your finger and it works as a toothbrush for a cat. Whatever you do for kitty, be sure to NOT use toothpaste meant for humans on kitty. Good luck!
