Do I need to have my cat's teeth shaved or shortened?

I know this sounds ridiculous but my 5 year old male cat's upper "fang" teeth protrude past his bottom jaw pretty far. It is actually making indentions in his lower gums. I have had several cats in my lifetime but never had one with this problem. I just want to be sure it is normal or if I need to have something done about them. By the way, he eats dry food and doesn't seem to be bothered by the long length.

Do I need to have my cat's teeth shaved or shortened?
Hi Ginger...if your cat isn't having any difficulty with eating or drinking water and is not exhibiting any type of pain it may not be necessary to do anything. However, without being able to physically see your cat it is best to have a veterinarian evaluate his condition to see if it merits medical treatment.
Reply:ask the vet but sounds like you need to but let a profesional do it or show you how
Reply:shortened... It sounds less painful. Ask your vet for advice.

Reply:Let them be- He's a sabre-tooth variety.
Reply:as long as he can still eat,and he is not in pain, I would leave them alone
Reply:You should call a vet and ask them, they usually answer questions like that for me- over the phone. If its not really bothering the cat, I really dont see what problem it would cause. But then again, I am not a vet! Best of luck.
Reply:I would ask your veterinarian.
Reply:I have never seen or heard of this either. What does you vet say about it? If any one should know he/she does.
Reply:The person I used to work for had a cat like that. As long as he's eating fine and his lower jaw isn't inflamed, it should not be a problem. Besides, it looks really neat!
Reply:I had a cat with this, my vet said it's genetic (that he came from a long line of good fighters and mousers, *grin*), but that it wasn't anything to worry about. The indentions are from the gum adjusting to the teeth. If they aren't causing pain (which with cats you should check with your vet as cats are very good at hiding discomfort), then leave them alone.
Reply:HI GINGER S

my cat, rusty, had fangs like that and he was just fine. they did not interfere with his eating so i just let him be
Reply:I totally agree with All About Me. If he can eat, and doesn't seem to be in pain, then his rather long fangs must not bother him so don't worry about it.
Reply:NO! A lot of my cats fang teeth do this. Some of them are just this way. It is nothing to be concerned about.
Reply:I think you actually need to have the cats lower lip surgically repaired...this can happen and eventually teeth will purse lower lip...have a vet evaluate.
