my cats teeth are getting yellow and i need to clean them ,I was wondering if you can do that with toothpaste we use or do i have to buy him pet kind.
Can you clean you clean cats teeth with human toothpaste?
Hi Nikki...human toothpaste is considered very toxic to cats so ideally you can purchase flavoured enzymatic toothpaste from most pet stores that is safe to use. Here's an example of one excellent product: http://www.sitstay.com/cgi-bin/sdisp.cgi...
Here's a video by Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine on how to successfully brush cats teeth:http://www.felinevideos.vet.cornell.edu/...
Reply:NO NO NO!!! Try something from a petstore which is specially formulated for cats...silly!
Reply:They have food available for cats that will help clean the teeth and can whiten them. These are mostly available at real pet stores.
Reply:NO! Dogs and cats can't have human toothpaste! You get sick if you swallow it yourself, a cat or dog will get really sick.
You have to use a pet toothpaste if you use toothpaste on them. But you can also wrap some gauze around a finger and just brush the side teeth with that, it makes it easier to do on some animals.
Reply:u need to buy the pet kind because there teeth are built up diferently than that, my vet gave me the toothpaste and gave me and idea to mix a lil baking pwder into cat food very lil and the teeth with stregthen and whiten! well good luck!
Reply:For my dog I use a liquid oral care that I add to her water. They make it for cats also. I got mine at Pets Mart they have a few different types of oral care products.
Reply:NO! Pet toothpaste please!
Reply:no, because people toothpaste is not meant to be swallowed, and just imagine what would happen if your cat swallowed a mouthful. I brush my dogs teeth with special dog flavor toothpaste and I know they have some cat stuff out there too.
Reply:No it can be poisonous! Cats don't know how to spit it out like us!
Reply:no, no no no!! human toothpaste can seriously harm a cats teeth. but dont let this stop you from keeping your cat orally healthy, just go to your nearest pet store and buy some cat toothpaste, problem solved!
Reply:No, I would not do that. Ask the vet to recommend something for cats.
Reply:no, the flouride can harm or kill them. try petco or your vet for special toothpaste made just for them. and if you have used your toothpaste on them, take them to the vet just incase.
Reply:I would use human toothpaste sure get that stuff from china that's not safe for people. What the world need's is one less cat or 50 or more
Reply:buy pet toothpaste
Reply:Hi Nikki, Seattle has the best answer. I was going to send you to that video about getting your cats used to the tooth brushing routine.
If you want just a simple reason why you shouldn't use human toothpaste on your cat, just put some toothpaste on your finger and offer it to kitty for a sniff test. I have never owned a cat that didn't 1) want to know what I was doing when I was brushing my teeth. And 2) that didn't wince and pull away when they got a sniff of that minty stuff.
Anyway... here's the bigger issue. If your cat's teeth are showing plaque build up, or if kitty has bad breath. There's no amount of scrubbing you can do yourself to fix the problem. Your vet should take a look. They can clean things and do any dental work (tooth extraction.) This can be very expensive ($200) since they have to anesthetize your cat to do it.
