My cat will not let me open his mouth to check his teeth. How do you do it?

I try to push both sides of his little jaws, but he won´t let me open his mouth to look at his teeth.

I let mine fall asleep in my arms while watching TV and then do it.
Reply:Cats are very sensitive when it comes to their ears, eyes, and mouth. I suggest letting a vet help you out.
Reply:they hate being forced to do something
Reply:Wow that is a shocker.... :p

well as you already know cats don't usually have the attitude of " i want to please my owner" , unlike certain breeds of dogs / dogs in general. with that in mind try to , or if you already know, find out what your cat WILL tolerate and work with that. As already stated cats hate to be forced to do anything, they are very independent creatures. maybe try to have the cat associate the teeth checking / brushing with a TREAT (as with a dog), open tis mouth forcefully but afterward give it a treat...etc. Try that until it lets you open its mouth to check / brush its teeth. or if it just does not like that deal with it. Reply:Hi,

I have two cats with two totally different personalities, one is a gentle spirit and one is fighter and we have problems checking his teeth or even trying to give him deworming tablets. What we were advised by our vet and have tried that works is to hold the cats skin on the neck area, the area their mother would carry them when they were little kittens, and almost immediately they become docile, you will probably need an extra pair of hands for this so that one holds and one does the checking, there will be less resistance (not total believe me) and will be able to check him, though try and make it quick so that he doesnt get stressed. Hope it works for you too, coz if there is one thing I know, just like people not everything works for all cats :-) they are like people with fur :-) :-)
Reply:Place one hand over his head and use your thumb and index finger to get a hold of his mouth. Use your other hand to gently pull back and open his mouth. This should work, as the vets do it in this manner. If it doesn't, take him to the vet. No big deal.
Reply:My cat didn't let me open it's mouth either. No cat lets someone touch it's teeth, mouth, ears, moustache... they hate when someone touches them. When you touch it's tail for example it always licks the spot where you touched it. Kitties are very stubborn animals and they don't like when someone commands them. So when I had to open it's mouth to check what's wrong, I had to do it by force.. I didn't like it but that was the only way..
