My cat has a sore mouth after teeth extraction a week ago. He spent 3 days in hospital on a drip.?

We can't give him his medicine and he is not eating like he used to. Have tried a diffuser to calm him but I'm worried that his mouth is infected. The vet is an hour away. His sister died three weeks ago and he also misses her. She was 17 and he is 11. Does it take this long?

Okay, medicine....is it pill or liquid? If it is a pill, you can just "pill him." Which isn't all that hard. Simply scruff him, tilting his head upward, with your left hand. With your thumb and middle fingers, hold his mouth open, place the pill in the back of his throat, as far as you can, then rub his neck downward, to force him to swallow. If you miss the first time, he may allow a second try, if not, wait a bit and try again. If this doesn't work, you can pick up a pill gun at your local pet store, and if you need help using it, contact me. You can do the same for a liquid, scruff and put dropper to back of throat. Food. Are you feeding him wet or dry food? Usually following an extraction, it is recommended that you feed wet food only for at least a week, sometimes longer. Even if its junk food, like Friskies, its something in his system, if not, you could try putting some cooked chicken in a chopper, see if he'll eat that. Usually cats spring back within a week, following tooth extraction, some cats take longer. The mourning may also be a factor, he's upset and not concentrating on himself. I'd recommend that you call your vet and explain the situation, they'll advise you as to whether or not you should come in. In the meantime, give kitty lots of love and snuggles, he's mourning. Good luck.
Reply:You need to take him to the vet-even if it is an hour away. He is obviously in a lot of pain and he will get really weak if he doesn't eat.
Reply:I would definitely call your vet to make sure about your kitty. Why can't you give him his medicine? Wont he take it? We have found that liquid meds work better than pills for our cats. I would not wait on this. He sounds like he needs medical attention right away. Good luck!
Reply:I'd call the vet and find out what he/she thinks before I take the trip back to the vet. His mouth may be infected and they will be able to tell you what to look for.

To make a cat take a pill, which is no simple feat stick the pill in the back of the cat's mouth and then blow in his face. This has helped me get pills down mine.
Reply:The mouth is the dirtiest place in both human and especially in animals. You should return him to the vet. Distance should not be a problem when it comes to a loved one. Let the vet decide. The cat needs to eat and drink to heal. After mouth surgery for people takes awhile to heal...if you stopped eating because you had a lot of pain...they'd place you on an i.v. Your pet needs medical help.
Reply:It depends on the immunity of the cat. Just like human, our healing process defer. Some cats heal faster than others, the best way to help him is show him love and affection, he needs it now more than ever. He needs time to start eating like he used to, be patient and watch him closely. Make sure he likes the vet.
