How safe is it for an 11 year old cat to have its teeth cleaned under anesthesia?

As long as he/she is healthy otherwise most vets would clean the teeh under light anesthesia. The vet I work for would definitely recommend pre-anesthetic bloodwork before the procedue to make sure the liver and kidneys are functioning properly

Fairly safe. There are still risks, they may want to do an IV and/or a catheter, and they may not want to keep him under as long, but they do this regularly and usually without problems.

I commend you for taking care of your cat so well!
Reply:IT IS TOTALLY SAFE AND LESS STRESSFUL FOR THE ANIMAL. AS LONG AS YOU TRUST YOUR VET AND HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THEM, ANESTHESIA IS NOT BAD AND CAN ACTUALLY BE BETTER BECAUSE THE ANIMAL DOESN'T GET AS STRESSED OUT FROM THE PROCEDURE.
Reply:you should be safe but if you are a paranoid mum i'd recommend doing some pre-anesthetic blood work to check liver and kidney function so then your vet can plan accordingly :) i did a dental on my cat when he was 16. after doing bloodwork we realised his kidneys were slowing down so we had him on iv fluids and he pulled through just fine.
Reply:Once a cat reaches the age of 7, they should have a complete blood workup, called "geriatric profile". It's done every year when she gets her shots. My 16 y.o. is having dental work done, and the vet said it's fine, as long as the bloodwork is OK.
Reply:If your cat is otherwise healthy, it should be safe.

Some vets prefer to do blood work when working with older cats though, especially if they don't have Kitty's medical history on hand.
Reply:Your vet already should have told you he would do blood work up and exam, and whatever else is necessary. After that it should be OK. If not you need a new vet.
