Can having a cats teeth cleaned cause there throat to become infected from the breathing tube?

I had my cat's teeth cleaned about a month ago. She seemed fine until 2 weeks later she kept swallowing a lot. I gave her hair ball medicine and it seemed to go away. Now she's doing it again. She keeps swallowing and some of the time her throat sounds hoarse. Her nose is running too.





I took her to the vet today and they did an x-ray to make sure she doesn't have anything caught in her throat. The x-ray looked fine she said but she said there tonsils can become infected. But that they are so far back they can't see them by just looking in there mouth. She gave me antibiotics for my kitty but said if it doesn't get better to bring her back and they'll look down her throat with some sort of scope type thing.





So have any of you had this problem after having your cats teeth cleaned. She's 8 years old and has never been like this before. All I can think is her throat got really irritated and possible infected from something to do with that.

It's possible it's from the tube, it can be difficult to intubate a cat. If the person doing it was in too much of a hurry or wasn't paying attention, they may have scratched the tonsils. Also, if they didn't deflate the cuff when the tube was pulled from her throat, it could stress the tonsils or vocal cords as well.

Reply:I've never had that specific problem, but I know that of all the animals out there you can own as pets, cats and rabbits are the two most prone to infection. The tube may have scraped the inside of her throat and gotten it infected. Just keep a good eye on her and keep giving her the antibiotics. If this doesn't help, take her to the vet. I would also suggest watching what she eats and make sure she's not getting into anything bad. On top of that, make sure she's not getting into the insulation in the house. I had a cat that got permanent lung damage from crawling around in insulation which involved regular sneezing/coughing. Good luck.
Reply:It could be possible for the throat to have become severely irritated. It usually does take 2 weeks for a cat to get sick. Your cat could've gotten sick from another cat in the clinic, from something else in the clinic, or from some other factor.





If your cat did get sick from the clinic then it was good that you did something about it so that it won't happen to other cats. If it wasn't from the clinic then it could be a reaction to having had her teeth clean but not because of the clinic itself.





I would go with the vet said and take your cat back if she doesn't get better.
