Why does my cat pull her fur out with her teeth?

My cat has a huge bald spot on her back from pulling out her own fur. I have checked her for fleas millions of times and I never find any. Also, I don't use any chemicals or anything on her that could possibly irritate her skin. She always pulls her fur out at the same, exact spot on her back. She will turn her head as far back as she can, lick the spot a few times, then use her teeth to grasp the fur and then jerk it out. Then she spits the fur out and does it all over again. She has not been fixed and one vet assistant said she thought it might be hormonal. Has anyone ever experienced this?

She might have a form of kitty dermatitis. Check for little sores around her mouth, on her toes or on her ears. Cats with this problem will lick themselves bald if it doesn't get treated. It is usually treated with some form of prednisone.
Reply:Yes and it's not hormonal. It is nerves. We had a cat that did the EXACT same thing. She was stressed out just as your cat must be over something in her environment. In our case we had other cats that bothered her. The vet told us to try to give her a "place of her own", so we cleared out the bottom shelf of the linen closet and put a towel in there and then showed it to her. She quickly claimed that as "her spot" and spent quite a bit of time in there. She also stopped the excessive cleaning of her back. Her hair grew back eventually.
Reply:parasites or dermatitis (allergies)...either by food or environment (have you had new carpeting or flooring installed?)

then some cats are just neurotic.

Have you TAKEN YOUR CAT TO A VET for diagnosis???????
Reply:My older cat has done this and like Pal said above, my older cat has licked herself practically bald. My vet said "flea allergy", even tho, like you, I could never find any fleas or evidence of them. My vet says w/an allergy, she only needs to get bitten and it will cause irritation for the cat. And yes, she received a shot and it seemed to clear it up. And her hair grew back, but took a very long time. I'd check w/your vet. Good luck!
Reply:Oh, God. No, I have a kitty, but she's never done this, hopefully never will. But, anyway, it wouldn't hurt to see about getting her fixed, believe it or not, spaying/neutering cats solves alot of "weird" behaviors!
Reply:my cat does this, she has for years, at 1st i thought it was nerves, and could b a bit of the obsessive compulsiveness-nees that cats just have. but she also has allergies. she needs a shot every 6 weeks but even thats not good b/c its steroidal and will shorten her life but with out it shes miserable
